There are two basic kinds of lift trucks, units that run on gas and those which run on electricity:
Internal Combustion or IC Forklifts: The Internal Combustion forklift will run on fuels like liquid propane, gas, compressed natural gas or CNG or diesel. Gas powered units are great for outdoor applications as they emit gases and pollutants that are harmful to workers and pedestrians. Gas models are also suitable for use in the rain and in bad weather conditions. These units can lift weights roughly 15,000 to 35,000 pounds. Because of the maintenance and fuel expenses, the gas powered units are more expensive to utilize than the electric models, although, they cost much less up front compared to electric powered units. Units which run on liquid propane are the right choice to be utilized in indoor applications.
Electric Forklifts: Electric lift trucks take batteries which require frequent charging. Since these models do not burn any fuel, there are no emissions polluting the air with these vehicles. They are the best alternative for indoor use and warehouses. As well, electric forklifts do not need any fuel storage units and they are much quieter to run than other units. Amongst the disadvantages of the electric units is that they are unable to lift loads over 15,000 pounds and thus, have a slower acceleration compared to gasoline powered models.
Lift trucks are specially made to easily and quickly move heavy loads with simplicity. As the case with most kinds of equipments, unfortunately, lift truck accidents do occur frequently. There are some safety rules which should be followed to be able to keep everybody safe. The most vital problem is recruiting a qualified operator, who can show you a valid lift truck license.
On the market nowadays, there are many different styles of forklifts available. Deciding which one is right for your particular needs will be based on the types of loads which you have to transport, what type of environment your equipment will have to operate in, for instance, indoors or outdoors or both. Once you know your specific requirements, it will be very easy to match up to the right type of lift truck. When you know all your requirements precisely you will be able to make the best decision.
Another great way to get first hand experience on the different lift truck units is the try renting your forklift. This will also allow you to see all the possible options available to you. This is a cheaper way to know if the machinery you have chosen could keep up with you on the job location.
