Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by big industrial batteries that have to be charged frequently and maintained properly. Safety measures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is vital to inspect fluid levels in the battery.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
It is vital for workers working with a forklift battery to wear eye protection. Other PPG include goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
An emergency eyewash post must be located close to the charging area. The path to the station must not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to go to the eyewash post from the charging place in 10 seconds without running.
Charger Safety
The charger must be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
While near a battery and charging area, open fire are prohibited. Never permit items like matches or lighters to be utilized when someone is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging place well ventilated. The recharging method can cause fumes to be released. These gases are both toxic and explosive.
